Leeds United might have got a bargain if they had spent £7m on Wolfsburg's Bundesliga ace.

Leeds United were handed a glimpse of what might have been on Saturday afternoon.

Bild claimed back in April that The Whites were willing to pay £7 million to bring Wolfsburg midfielder Elvis Rexhbecaj to Elland Road this summer but their hopes were extinguished almost as quickly as the links appeared.

Just days later, Rexhbecaj committed his future to the 2009 Bundesliga champions by signing a new contract until 2023.

And the 21-year-old now seems hell bent on proving all the doubters that he would have been worth every penny of that £7 million transfer fee – a fee that is probably far higher now.

Rexhbecaj produced probably the best performance of his young career on the final day of the 2018/19 Bundesliga season when Wolfsburg welcomed Augsburg to the Volkswagen Arena.

Hat-trick hero Wout Weghorst dominated the headlines with a clinical hat-trick but Rexhbecaj pulled all the strings in that remarkable 8-1 win – a result that secures the Wolves’ place in next season’s Europa League.

He set up Weghorst’s third goal with a perfectly weighted pass before getting himself on the scoresheet with a sublime curling shot on the hour. This was just his second Bundesliga goal but what a way to score it.

Unfortunately for Leeds, this pipe dream died a few weeks ago.
