The Saints can't afford to be in another battle at the bottom have had two close shaves in a row, but there is reasonable optimism that Hasenhuttl will provide a brighter future.
Having mostly focused on shipping players out in January, Hasenhuttl will now look to retool his squad at St Mary's Stadium, and one target has emerged this week.
The Daily Mail report that Southampton are readying a £5million bid for LASK Linz winger Thomas Goiginger, with Hasenhuttl seemingly a big fan of his fellow Austrian.
Goiginger, 26, has enjoyed a stunning season, racking up 14 goals and 17 assists in 40 games, and his outstanding stats in Austria will take fans back to Sadio Mane.
The Saints took a calculated punt on Mane based off his displays for Red Bull Salzburg, despite concerns that jumping to the Premier League would be too big of a leap. Mane was a sensation for the Saints, proving that players in Austria can make the step up.
Now, Saints fans will hope that Goiginger can make a similar impact. He's not quite as young or fast, but he's more rounded than Mane was back in 2014, and comes at an absolute bargain price.
At 26, Southampton will be looking for a quick impact from Goiginger, and having posted outstanding stats in Austria – just like Mane did five years ago – Saints fans will be hoping that Hasenhuttl has spotted a diamond in the rough in Goiginger.
