Derby County will look to sign a former Aston Villa player if Frank Lampard masterminds a win over Dean Smith in the Championship play-off final at Wembley next week.
According to the Mirror (21 May, page 49), Lampard is keen to reunite with his former Chelsea and England teammate Gary Cahill should The Rams bring an end to their 11-year exile from the Premier League.
33-year-old Cahill is due to become a free-agent after a disappointing end to his trophy-laden spell at Stamford Bridge, having fallen down the pecking order under Maurizio Sarri.
The experienced centre-back has no interest in bringing an end to his stellar playing career, however, and would surely jump at the chance to join a rival Premier League club – even if he would have to reduce his £75,000 a week wages.
The Mirror adds that Sheffield United, West Ham and Southampton are also keen on Cahill but the chance to work with Lampard again could give Derby an added advantage.
Cahill started his career at Derby’s play-off final opponents Villa, spending eight years with the Midland giants before joining Bolton in 2008.
