Sunderland made it past Portsmouth last night to book their place at Wembley for the second time this season.
The Black Cats are now just one win away from making an immediate return to the Championship.
However, the stressful nature of the play offs means that Ross would much rather have secured Sunderland’s promotion by finishing in the top two.
He said: “People keep telling me it’s the best way to do it – I don’t know if I necessarily agree with them, I’d like to be on holiday right now with promotion secured.
“But I understand what they mean by it because of the excitement and the tension that was around these games. We’re back at Wembley, in front of a big crowd, and we’ll look forward to it when it comes around.”
Sunderland actually had a great chance to earn automatic promotion this season, but they let it slip.
The Black Cats’ form over the back end of the campaign was poor, as Luton Town and Barnsley took the top two spots in League One.
Sunderland were back to their resilient best in the play offs last night though, as they held out for the 0-0 draw they needed at Fratton Park.
Sunderland will now take on either Doncaster Rovers or Charlton Athletic at Wembley in two Saturdays’ time.
