According to Calciomercato.com, Everton and Watford are interested in signing AC Milan central defender Cristian Zapata in the summer transfer window.

The 32-year-old Colombia international is out of contract at Milan this summer, and Everton and Watford are reportedly looking at signing the centre-back on a free transfer.

Mistake from Everton

Zapata is a good defender, but the Colombian is now 32 years of age, and despite his experience and obvious attraction as a free agent, Everton should not make a move for him.

The Toffees need young central defenders who will be an asset to the club for years to come.

Moreover, back in the summer of 2016, Everton signed an ageing Ashley Williams from Swansea City for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £12 million.

Then 31 years of age, the Wales international centre-back arrived at Goodison Park with a strong reputation, but as it turned out, he was past his best and now is out of contract at the Toffees this summer, having spent the 2018-19 campaign on loan at Stoke City in the Championship.

Everton should not repeat that mistake with Zapata this summer.
