The transfer window only opened officially on Thursday but it seems that Nottingham Forest and Queens Park Rangers have already missed out on a bargain signing.

The Mail reported in March that the Championship duo were going head to head to sign Wigan Athletic forward Gavin Massey with his contract due to expire at the end of the season.

The 26-year-old joined The Latics from Leyton Orient in 2017 and, after helping Paul Cook’s side cruise to the League One title last year, starred as Wigan narrowly avoided relegation from the Championship.

Massey scored five times in 20 Championship games with two of those coming in a match-winning brace away at Leeds United in April.

But despite the chance to play for Forest or QPR, the Watford-born speed machine has decided to commit his future to Wigan instead.

Speaking on Twitter, Massey has confirmed that he has signed a new two-year deal with the 2013 FA Cup winners – and, in his own words, he couldn’t be happier.

Nottingham Forest and QPR are still expected to invest this summer as they look to build on disappointing Championship campaigns.
