The Mail reported in March that the Championship duo were going head to head to sign Wigan Athletic forward Gavin Massey with his contract due to expire at the end of the season.
The 26-year-old joined The Latics from Leyton Orient in 2017 and, after helping Paul Cook’s side cruise to the League One title last year, starred as Wigan narrowly avoided relegation from the Championship.
Massey scored five times in 20 Championship games with two of those coming in a match-winning brace away at Leeds United in April.
But despite the chance to play for Forest or QPR, the Watford-born speed machine has decided to commit his future to Wigan instead.
Speaking on Twitter, Massey has confirmed that he has signed a new two-year deal with the 2013 FA Cup winners – and, in his own words, he couldn’t be happier.
Wow! What a season! I honestly couldn’t be any happier. Committing my future to this club and repaying the Gaffa, the boys and the fans for the faith they’ve installed in me has been my number 1 wish all season and I’m absolutely buzzing to say we got it done... pic.twitter.com/pw32oVXUAG— Gavin Massey (@Gavinmassey92) May 17, 2019
...I’m here till at least 2021 and with plenty of highlights for me last season I can only say the best is yet to come . Can’t wait to get going again, see you all real soon ⚪ pic.twitter.com/GDKUdydGAb— Gavin Massey (@Gavinmassey92) May 17, 2019
Nottingham Forest and QPR are still expected to invest this summer as they look to build on disappointing Championship campaigns.
