Although Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 Remake looks stunning, some fans are concerned about the supposed whitewashing of Barret.

Square Enix revived their Final Fantasy 7 Remake at Sony’s second State Of Play episode, but a number of fans are concerned that Barret has been “whitewashed”.

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake was first announced in 2015,  but since then the highly-anticipated title has been stuck in development hell.

Fans were thrilled to see its return at State Of Play, yet the glee over its beautiful graphics has quickly turned to rage.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake: “Why TF does Barret look white?”

Kotaku recently expressed their concerns about Barret’s voice, and now the community is worried that the character has been “whitewashed”.

Next to Cloud, Sephiroth and Aerith, Barret is one of Final Fantasy 7’s most iconic characters thanks to his appearance and contrasting style.

Unfortunately, some fans on Twitter (as spotted by ResetEra) have expressed their dismay at him being given the Robert Downey Jr. Tropic Thunder treatment.

Some asked if Square Enix had whitewashed the iconic gunner, while an individual on Reddit said that the lightened skin tone makes the party member resemble a “white biker dude”.

Meanwhile, others are simply disappointed that Barret doesn’t have the same “gruff” exterior he did back in 1997.

In Square Enix’s defence, some Twitter users pointed out that the outrage is nonsense and that Barret’s look is the result of lighting.

Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 Remake doesn’t have a release date, but fans can expect to see more at E3 2019
