Marcelo Bielsa has suggested that he would be open to considering staying at Leeds United for another season.
Several Leeds fans have taken to Twitter to react after Marcelo Bielsa suggested, in comments reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, that he would be open to staying at Elland Road for another year if the club want him to stick around.
The Whites are coming to terms with one of their most agonising defeats in recent memory as they missed out on securing a spot in the play-off final after losing 4-3 on aggregate.
It was the latest cruel twist in what has been a scarcely-believable, and yet so predictable conclusion to Leeds’ season. And questions will now be asked about what the future holds for Bielsa.
The Yorkshire Evening Post reports that his contract would have automatically been extended had Leeds got promoted, and Andrea Radrizzani still hopes to keep him beyond the summer, but Bielsa could now choose to walk away.
And while the Argentinian gave little away, he did open the door to the possibility of him staying and having another go at trying to deliver promotion next season.
“As you can imagine, it’s not convenient to talk about this right now. This process, you know about it, is that if the club offers me the possibility to carry on I will listen to their proposal,” he said, as reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post.
“What the players offered to the club this season will be valued over time. The fact that we couldn’t reach the goals we were so close to leaves a feeling of disappointment but you can have another perspective about it.”
In response to the comments, it is clear that many Leeds fans feel that keeping Bielsa could be the most important piece of business that the Whites can do this summer.
It must not be forgotten that he was predominantly working with a squad that finished in mid-table last season. And there is a feeling that with more financial backing, and perhaps a slightly bigger squad, Bielsa is still the right man for the job.
Here is how some of the fans reacted to his latest comments on his future…
We were nothing this season without him please don’t go— Henry Currie⚪️ (@henryCurrie9) May 15, 2019
He’s off— Dan (@Sidey2002) May 15, 2019
Thrust a pen and a contract in his hand, promise him whatever he wants, leave Bamford in the car park and let’s start preparing for next season— Graham Hodgson (@TheTallerGuy) May 15, 2019
He has to stay,— Lee Dorsi (@Leedorsi) May 15, 2019
He’s the best thing to happen to us in years,
With a few new faces and the U23’s,
Next season is so promising
@andrearadri He has to stay another year and take us up. He is unbelievable and we need to sort early so that we can plan for the new season. Please Andrea let’s get this sorted. I am completely devastated at the moment but I think everybody staying together will be the key— Tommo (@nigelt71) May 15, 2019
Stay stay stay. He backs the players and takes the heat but it’s time the players backed him and took some flack for some rather silly and childish mistakes— Harry Somerville (@HarrySomerville) May 15, 2019
Stability is the key. It’s no coincidence this is the first season in a while where we’ve had the same manager at the start and end of the season, and it’s our best finish in years. Give home another year or two— Anth Ridley (@AnthRidley81) May 15, 2019
I hope he stays. The club have got to back him to the hilt. We need to hold on to key players, and say goodbye to some others. You get what you pay for, hence why we are still in the Championship.— Stephen Lewis (@vegansmithsfan) May 15, 2019
He knows with a bit more investment we can win this league. He needs to stay.— Chris Neal (@cgsneal) May 15, 2019
We need him— NW (@Nick_P_Walker) May 15, 2019
