Newcastle United are still undecided about whether they want to sell Jonjo Shelvey this summer though West Ham are confident about signing the England international, according to the Sun (16 May, page 56).
Shelvey looked all but certain to be on his way out of St James’ Park a few months ago but he managed to force his way back into Rafa Benitez’s starting XI in the final weeks of the Premier League season.
The former Liverpool playmaker even captained the side against Brighton before scoring a stunning volley in the 4-0 thrashing of Fulham that Cottagers manager Scott Parker described as ‘world class’ (the Chronicle).
As a result, the Sun reports that Newcastle could perform a dramatic U-turn over Shelvey’s future. The 27-year-old is ‘in the dark’ as things stand and is still waiting to here whether he will remain on Tyneside.
Interestingly, the report adds that Shelvey wants to stay at Newcastle despite the prospect of joining his boyhood club, West Ham.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side are apparently confident that they will get their man with Shelvey valued at £20 million, but there could be a sting in the tail yet.
