Another day, another defensive target on Arsenal’s radar. According to the Mail, the Gunners have now turned their attention to Espanyol’s Mario Hermoso as Unai Emery looks to reinforce his side’s well-publicised Achilles heel.
Arsenal have conceded over 60 goals in each of the last two Premier League seasons and, with the likes of Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos struggling to perform on a consistent basis, a new defender or two is a must.
The Sun (1 May, page 54) reports that Emery has instructed the club to buy him a ‘top class’ centre-back with Harry Maguire, Kurt Zouma and Getafe powerhouse Djene Dakonam on his wish list.
And The Mail has now added Hermoso into the mix.
A classy, ball playing 23-year-old defender who has earned two caps for the Spanish national team, Hermoso started his career at Real Madrid but has made his name at Espanyol since moving to Catalonia in 2017.
His ability to distribute the ball accurately from the back will certainly appeal to Emery too. Hermoso, who scored three La Liga goals in 2018/19, has an 83 per cent pass completion rate with some suggesting he could replace Gerard Pique in the Spanish national team.
