Celtic supporters on Twitter well and truly lauded the performance John McGinn put in for Aston Villa as they booked their place in the Championship play-off final on Tuesday night.

The Scotland international was arguably the best player on the park at The Hawthorns as Villa needed penalties to beat their Midland rivals in an epic and nerve-racking encounter.

Last summer, Villa, who had then-manager Steve Bruce in charge of the club, signed McGinn from Scottish Premiership side Hibernian as a relatively unknown figure.

As quoted by The Edinburgh News, McGinn, who is a boyhood Celtic fan, had his heart set on a move to Parkhead, but that didn't materialise for one reason or another.

As a result, Villa snapped him up instead and he has since gone on to win Villa's Players' Player of the Year and the Supporters Player of the Year.

It is fair to say, whilst watching him in action at West Brom on Tuesday in what was a very nervy match, Celtic fans rued the opportunity they missed in signing him as he showcased his qualities on and off the ball.

The energetic midfielder McGinn will now be preparing for the play-off finals where his team have a chance of reaching England's top-flight.

Dean Smith's side will take on Frank Lampard's Derby County, who knocked out Leeds United in the most dramatic of fashions at Elland Road on Wednesday.
