HITC Sport understands Bury defender Tom Aldred is poised to join Robbie Fowler’s Brisbane Roar.

Robbie Fowler is set to make Bury defender Tom Aldred his first signing since taking charge of Australian A-League side Brisbane Roar, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Central defender Aldred is a free agent this summer when his contract at Bury expires next month and Brisbane Roar have offered him the chance to move to Australia.

Aldred has spent this season on loan at Scottish Premiership side Motherwell, making 39 appearances in all competitions for the club.

The 28-year-old boasts a wealth of experience having made over 300 first-team appearances during spells at Blackpool, Accrington Stanley, Bury and Motherwell.

New Brisbane Roar boss Fowler is looking to bolster his side’s defensive options ahead of the new A-League season and they have targeted a move for Aldred.

The Roar finished a disappointing ninth last season and Fowler is keen to reshape the squad as he looks to bring the club back to its former glories.

Fowler is an admirer of Aldred and feels his experience and leadership skills will be vital for his young side next season and he could be the first of several new faces to arrive from the UK.
