The 22-year-old Glasgow Rangers midfielder is back at Ibrox.
The Scottish midfielder has returned to Auchenhowie following a season-long loan at Shrewsbury Town.
Docherty, who dazzled down South, is set for another chance to impress Steven Gerrard and played in a behind-closed-doors game against Chelsea youngsters on Tuesday.
The 22-year-old is a boyhood fan of the Gers, and the former Hamilton ace admitted that watching Gerrard's side evoked a sense of disappointment that he wasn't apart of things.
He told The Scottish Sun: "I'm not going to lie, it was difficult watching them because it gets that fire inside you that you really want to be a part of it.
"Watching the Old Firm on Sunday was fantastic and you could really see the buzz back in the place. And you could see that we may be on the brink of something special, and you could see that the fans are back on board.
"It's just a good time to be at the club and I knew this season that if I stagnated this year, it wouldn't have benefited me as much as going out and getting games."
Docherty might well get chances in a more advanced midfield role under Gerrard.
He left Rangers as a defensive midfielder but, by virtue of the fact he reached double figures in goals for the League One side, you could argue that he is better suited to more attacking responsibilities.
