Daenerys vs Cersei — Who was Game of Thrones' best Queen?

Game Of Thrones - Daenerys V Cersei

Game of Thrones saw a truly game-changing moment in its most recent episode

HBO's Game of Thrones has spent the last eight seasons letting countless families and houses tear each other apart for the honour of sitting on the most uncomfortable looking chair, the Iron Throne

In recent seasons, two main contenders emerged as the leading forces in the battle to claim and keep the coveted throne, Cersei Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen, two Queens both with very different approaches to their method of ruling.

Since the final moments of Season 6, Cersei Lannister has sat atop the Iron Throne after her two sons, Joffrey and Tommen, succumbed to the show's murderously high death rate and has been seen as the show's main villain ever since.

Meanwhile, Daenerys Targaryen has spent every moment from her first appearance in Season 1 until the most recent episode doing all she can to win back the Iron Throne and rule of the Seven Kingdoms for House Targaryen, in doing so she's become one of the main heroes of the show.

However (and this is a big one), in the most recent episode, the tables were most definitely turned as Daenerys, who always spoke about ruling through love and not killing innocents, went totally AWOL and set about burning King's Landing, the capital city of Westeros, to the ground.

It was in these moments where some viewers realised who the better Queen was all along, and it certainly wasn't the one with the fire-breathing dragon.

Sure, Cersei Lannister has been, for all intents and purposes, a vile and manipulative character. She covertly arranged for the death of her husband, mothered several children in an incestuous relationship with her brother and blew up hundreds of people in the Great Sept of Baelor and yet she's never been as bad as Daenerys.

The Dragon Queen meanwhile has gone from city to city, murdering as she's gone and leaving nothing but leaderless and unstable civilisations behind her. From Qarth and Astapor to Meereen and King's Landing, Daenerys has led nothing but a life of violence since acquiring her dragons and armies, despite claiming to want an end to war. Ok, most of that was in an effort to abolish slavery but her instinctive bloodlust has always shone through and bubbled right up to the surface in the series' most recent episode.

While Cersei may have been a selfish and scheming woman who's only ever looked to better her situation, she's never once blown up an entire city, leaving its population and buildings an ashy ruin.

As a result, the main conclusion we have to draw is that Cersei was a better Queen and ruler than Daenerys despite what we've believed for the past eight seasons.
