Sky Sports pundit Phil Thompson has claimed that he would welcome Barcelona playmaker Philippe Coutinho back to Liverpool in a 'heartbeat'.

Jurgen Klopp's side recently missed out on the Premier League title to Manchester City when they recorded 97 points to their rivals quite astonishing 98 points.

Added with that, they are in yet another Champions League final and they will be preparing for that Madrid trip now the regular season has come to a close.

But former Anfield great, Thompson made an interesting transfer claim that he would be more than happy to see Coutinho make a return to the club.

"I would take him back in a heartbeat, but it would have to be now," Thompson told Sky Sports. "You don't want to leave it another 12 months, I think he still has the ability.

"He's suffered at Barcelona. We've seen him playing out wide on the left, but he's not Neymar. He likes to be in the middle where he can pull strings and is getting on the ball to hurt teams.

"He doesn't do that and he's not a left-winger and that's where he's playing at Barcelona; they don't love him like Liverpool loved him - He could open that door, he could score the goals that would get you the win."

In January 2018, Coutinho opted to make the switch from Merseyside to the Catalan giants, but he has struggled to prove his worth at the Nou Camp.

Jurgen Klopp has a very strong midfield, but there is no doubt that they miss that extra creative spark in the middle of the park. Adding Coutinho to their ranks once again would do wonders.

During his career, Coutinho has played 358 games for the likes of Liverpool, Barcelona and Inter where he has scored 86 goals and provided his teammates with 63 assists [transfermarkt]
