The Rangers manager, Steven Gerrard, reportedly wants the youngster at Ibrox next season.

Defender George Edmundson is the latest player linked with a move to Steven Gerrard’s Rangers this summer.

Many Rangers fans are unlikely to know too much about the Oldham Athletic youngster, who according to the Scottish Sun received a VIP tour of the Ibrox side’s Hummel Training Centre last week.

But fear not as we at HITC Sport bring you up to speed…

Who is he and what sort of player is he?

Standing at around six-feet-three-inches tall, it should come as little surprise to learn that Edmundson is a natural centre-half. The Oldham academy product is also noted for his leadership qualities, is Manchester-born and does not turn 22 until August this year.

What’s he done so far?

He recently completed his first full campaign in Oldham’s first team, having broken through during last season’s relegation from League One. And although it ended with the Latics in 14th place, Edmundson was inducted into the League Two team of the year.

In total the former Ramsbottom United, Alfreton Town and AFC Fylde loanee has played 79 times for his current employers, and has scored or made eight goals.

It has been quite a turnaround for Edmundson…

…who was initially told he would be released as a 17-year-old. However, his performance against MK Dons in the 2015 Youth Alliance Cup final, which Oldham won 4-0, earned him a reprieve.

What’s the story with Rangers?

The Daily Mail reports Rangers are ‘mulling a bid’ for Edmundson, who is about to enter the final year of his contract at Boundary Park and is ‘keen to play at a higher level’.

The newspaper adds Oldham want £450,000 for the player, who is described as being their ‘prized asset’.

Anyone else keen?

As well as Rangers, Edmundson has interest from Stoke, Hull, Preston, Sunderland and Fleetwood, according to the Daily Mail. It is claimed the Latics have already rejected offers for the 21-year-old, with Hull identified as the bidders by the Oldham Chronicle.

The latter publication states he is likely to be sold this summer, providing Oldham’s valuation is met.

Would Edmundson be a good addition for Rangers?
