The cast of James Gunn's Suicide Squad may have secured its villain.
Although James Gunn has been rehired onto Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3., we've had plenty of news coming in surrounding his forthcoming Suicide Squad project. David Ayer brought the diverse band of misfits and rogues to the screen back in 2017 to little avail. On the whole, the film was largely considered an unfortunate misfire, let down by problematic character depictions and Jared Leto's bewildering Joker performance.
The DCEU has grown so much since then and it's only been a short while. However, whenever we're reminded of Ayer's film we can't help but conjure up in our minds what could have been. Hopefully, Gunn is the man to move forward and conjure these images onto the screen.
He's proven himself as an accomplished figure in the realm of superhero cinema, and considering the bonkers avenues you could explore when adapting such wildly imaginative source material, he's a solid choice to direct. We're sure he'll deviate considerably from Ayer's muddled treatment, and so far some fantastic stars have displayed a keen interest in what he's sculpting.
As reported by ScreenRant, not only are John Cena and Idris Elba being eyed to star, but also Benicio Del Toro. The latter news comes courtesy of Geeks Worldwide, who say that Warner Bros. is keen to cast him as the film's villain; there have been no confirmations just yet, but hopefully, it's true.
Del Toro is a phenomenal performer and has blown audiences away in such efforts as Sicario, 21 Grams and Che. He also starred in Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy, so it would be great to see the pair reunited on this increasingly exciting project. It really is shaping up to be one of the most promising future additions to the DCEU, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for more updates.
In other news, is Robert Downey Jr. still on for Sherlock Holmes 3?
