Alberth Elis won’t come cheap.
Emilio Izaguirre gave us all a peak behind the curtain this week when the left-back claimed that Celtic were asking him about his fellow Honduran Elis, a speedy young striker who plays in the MLS with Houston Dynamo.
“Celtic have asked me about a few players from Honduras,” Izaguirre told the Scottish Sun.
“They've asked me several times about Elis. Who knows? Maybe one day they will sign players from Honduras like me.”
23-year-old Elis has enjoyed a fine start to the 2019 MLS campaign, scoring four goals and providing five assists in just eight games. The Honduran has long been seen as one of the biggest talents in central America and, with Scott Sinclair’s future uncertain, The Hoops might just have found a younger model.
But it remains to be seen whether Celtic are willing to dig deep and take a big risk on a player who Houston Dynamo value at around £7 million.
Honduran publication Diez reported in January that Fenerbahce had offered around £5 million, only to be told by the Texan outfit that they wouldn’t accept a penny less than £7 million.
Such a fee would make Elis the second most expensive signing in Celtic’s history, behind Odsonne Edouard. Though Elis could be a risk worth taking for a team who are in need of a bit of added attacking spark.
