Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has admitted that he wants his former club to make Leicester City play-maker James Maddison their top summer target, in quotes reported by the Express.

Maddison has made the step up to the top flight with ease since joining Leicester from Norwich in a £20 million deal last summer, scoring seven Premier League goals while providing a further seven assists.

A first England cap now appears only a matter of time for a player who’s creativity, vision and superb set-pieces have silenced those who questioned whether he could make the grade.

And Nicol believes Liverpool should seriously consider making a bid for Maddison this summer with Jurgen Klopp’s Champions League finalists still lacking a central midfielder capable of carving apart defences in the style of Philippe Coutinho.

“Klopp’s recent three in the middle of the park for Liverpool, over the last couple of years particularly, has been about gaining possession back, about closing the opposition back, about working really hard and then getting the ball to the front three,” Nicol said.

“I would love to see a little change in that with somebody like Maddison, who no question has already shown in the Premier League, from the middle of the park, he can open defences up, he can create chances.

“I think this would be a great signing.”

Liverpool were heavily linked with the one-time Coventry City starlet before he joined Leicester last summer, via the Mirror, and the Foxes would surely demand a huge fee now for a player who’s price-tag will have rocketed in the last nine months.

But it would be interesting to see just how far Maddison can go.
