Fans of Sheffield Wednesday look on during the Sky Bet Championship match between Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke City at Hillsborough Stadium on September 15, 2018 in Sheffield, England.

Some Sheffield Wednesday supporters are reacting with shock after the Owls announced Eyad Hammoud’s release on Wednesday.

Hammoud is one of seven Wednesday youngsters who aren’t being offered new contracts, along with Dan Wallis, Cameron McCulloch, Frederik Nielsen, Connor O’Grady, Warren Clarke and Liam Williams.

The Bulgarian’s exit had been on the cards after he played in a trial game for Preston North End at the end of last month – although he returned to help the Owls’ Under-18s to the Professional Development League 2 title.

Nevertheless, having been named among world football’s 60 best young talents by the Guardian newspaper earlier in the campaign, some of a Sheffield Wednesday persuasion are struggling to get their heads around the news.

Hammoud has spent the past two seasons on Sheffield Wednesday’s books, having previously played senior football for Lokomotiv Plovdiv from the age of 15.

But despite his reputation, the diminutive forward was some way from doing likewise at Hillsborough.

Could Wednesday rue Hammoud’s release?
