Paul Merson claims Leicester quartet would walk into Arsenal's team

Paul Merson has claimed that four of Leicester City’s players would walk into Arsenal’s starting XI after the Gunners were thumped 3-0 at the King Power Stadium last weekend, speaking to Sky Sports (2 May, 5:00pm).

Youri Tielemans netted a header before Jamie Vardy came to the fore with a late double on Sunday afternoon as Leicester consigned Unai Emery’s Arsenal to a third successive Premier League defeat, delivering a major blow to their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

But, while the Foxes tore Arsenal apart up front, they were also solid at the back with Ben Chilwell, Jonny Evans, Harry Maguire and particularly Ricardo Pereira, who set up Vardy’s second of the game, all producing fine performances.

And Gunners legend Merson believes that all four are better than anyone Arsenal can call upon at the back.

“I’d take the Leicester back four over Arsenal’s all day long. I’d swap the whole lot tomorrow morning,” Merson said.

“Not a chance (any of Arsenal defenders would start for Leicester). To be fair there’s not one at Man United’s who’d make Leicester’s.

“I like Chilwell, I think he’s a good player.”

Interestingly, Arsenal were linked with England international Maguire earlier this week, the Sun (1 May, page 54) claiming that Emery had identified the one-time Sheffield United starlet as a key target as he looks to bring in a ‘top-class’ centre-half.

Arsenal also made a £12 million bid for Evans in January 2018, when the experienced Irishman was still a West Brom player, according to the BBC.
