Newcastle United fans were in a joyous mood on Twitter after Joey Barton ended Sunderland's hopes of earning automatic promotion from League One.

On Tuesday night, Barton's Fleetwood Town recorded a 2-1 win over Jack Ross' side, with the home team netting a stoppage-time winner.

Before the match, Sunderland still had hopes of finishing in the top two, but that defeat has ended those hopes as they are now heading for the playoffs.

Considering he is a former Newcastle player, the win would have been even sweeter for Barton, who would have enjoyed the three points along with a large proportion of the Toon Army.

Here is a selection of Newcastle fans on Twitter reacting to Barton ending Sunderland's automatic hopes:

Barton is in his first season as manager and he will be looking to guide his team to a top 10 finish in the third tier of English football.

Fleetwood will be playing League One football next season, and if Sunderland fail in the playoffs then the same will apply to them.
