Leeds United sold Alex Mowatt to Barnsley in 2017.

Leeds United fans are congratulating Alex Mowatt on Twitter.

The former Leeds midfielder will be back in the Championship next season after Barnsley’s promotion was confirmed.

Defeats for Portsmouth and Sunderland confirmed the Tykes’ return to the second tier and Mowatt has been a big part of their success this season.

The 24-year-old, sold by United to the Oakwell side two years ago, has scored eight and set up seven goals for Daniel Stendel’s side this season.

Mowatt was a massive prospect at Leeds a few years ago, having come through the club’s Thorp Arch academy.

And here is how some Whites fans responded to his celebratory message last night.

Despite being happy for him, Leeds fans won’t want to face him in the league next season.

If all goes to plan, Marcelo Bielsa’s side will also win promotion to the Premier League, but they’ll have to do it the hard way via the playoffs after the capitulation of recent weeks.

Leeds finish their season with a trip to Ipswich Town on Sunday.
