Tottenham Hotspur have made a big bid to sign Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes ahead of the summer transfer window, according to the CM Jornal.
Spurs’ lack of depth has been brutally exposed in a disappointing run of form over recent weeks, culminating in their potentially damaging 1-0 home defeat in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final with Ajax.
So it is no surprise that Mauricio Pochettino is already drawing up plans for new additions with Fernandes, a 20-year-old Portugal international, apparently emerging as a top target.
Fernandes has made 44 appearances in a fine breakthrough season at Benfica, scoring three goals and providing six assists from a defensive midfield role. And, according to CM Jornal, Tottenham have launched a £38.5 million bid.
Benfica president Luis Felipe Vieira has rejected the offer however as he feels Fernandes is worth more in today’s rather madcap transfer market.
Tottenham are not the only Premier League outfit linked with the youngster, however. A Bola reported recently that Wolverhampton Wanderers are hoping to add the European U17 champion to their growing ranks of Iberian talents and were willing mulling over a potential club-record deal.
Fernandes has a £102 million release clause in his contract. And a dynamic, powerful midfielder like him could fill the void left by the influential Mousa Dembele when the Belgian moved to China in January.
