What does Vossi mean? Behind Stormzy's new lyrics

British rapper Stormzy (Michael Ebenazer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr) performs at Lowlands festival, Biddinghuizen, Netherlands, 18th August 2018.

Stormzy's new song Vossi Bop is out now, but what does "vossi" mean?

Many are asking what "vossi" means in wake of Stormzy's new track; "Vossi Bop". The English rapper is one of UK hip-hop's most exciting talents and the release of his debut album - Gang Signs & Prayer - back in 2017 introduced so many to him while helping to popularise grime for the masses. The record went on to earn numerous accolades and was actually the first ever grime album to reach number one on the UK Albums Chart; certainly no small feat.

Fans have been waiting patiently for new material for a while now but it looks like Stormzy is back with a bang. He has just released new single "Vossi Bop", accompanied with a new music video. Check it out below:

Both the video and song have impressed so far, signalling the return of a true talent. However, some are wondering what "vossi" means, or rather, what is a "vossi bop"? Well, there's an answer of course. It refers to a viral dance which was created back in 2015 by Twitter user @NL_Vossi; simply, it entails leaning in and bopping to the beat. It does seem odd that he's chosen to unleash the track now, but according to Captial Xtra it turns out that he teased the song way back when the dance was emerging. Here's a video to refresh your memories:

Popular actor Idris Elba actually features in the music video too, and yes, he also features on the track. "When I'm James Bond, tryna live my movie like I'm Idris," he says, with yet another hint at the star's potential role in the spy franchise. It's a pretty terrific video with a great song to match. Let's hope there more on the way in the near future.
