Samu Saiz was back on English TV screens on Thursday night, coming off the bench as Getafe held Real Madrid to a 0-0 draw in La Liga.
And now is the time for Leeds fans to wonder what might have been. After all, automatic promotion looks to have slipped through their grasp after Easter defeats to Wigan and Brentford with Marcelo Bielsa’s side likely to face the dreaded play-offs. Their Premier League dreams are hanging in the balance.
In fact, Leeds have been a shadow of their autumn best since the turn of the year, lacking creativity and imagination while resorting to tepid possession football and aimless crosses. It is quickly becoming apparent that Elland Road misses Saiz – badly too.
The Spaniard was never the most consistent of footballers but he was the man who made Leeds tick when at his best, a player capable of opening up defences and getting the best out of those around him.
Since he returned to Spain with Getafe in January, Bielsa’s side just haven’t carried the same attacking threat. And the fact that Saiz is strutting his stuff against Real after Leeds lose at Griffin Park sums up a miserable week in West Yorkshire.
Saiz just came on for Getafe against Real Madrid. It’s on ITV4 if anyone else fancies a cry. #lufc— Tom Mullen (@Tom_Mullen) April 25, 2019
