Manchester City have made the most of their game in hand in the Premier League by securing a solid 2-0 derby win over bitter rivals Manchester United and leapfrogging Liverpool back into top spot in the table.
The first half at Old Trafford yielded no goals but Pep Guardiola's charges broke the deadlock on 54 minutes when Bernardo Silva, on his 100th appearance for the club, drilled a low shot from 15 yards beyond David de Gea at his near post.
Just 12 minutes later the visitors doubled their lead and broke red hearts across Manchester and Liverpool with another low effort, this time from substitute Leroy Sane, despite De Gea getting a touch on the effort with his right foot.
The result sees Man City back at the summit, with 89 points from 35 games, one point ahead of Jurgen Klopp's side and also with a better goal difference, putting the Etihad Stadium side in pole position for a second consecutive title.
Sane, who has found starts difficult to come by in recent weeks and whose future at the club has been under speculation, took to Twitter after the game:
Some Man City fans responded not only in praising his derby display but also pleading with him not to leave the club:
