Newcastle United have been forced to deliver some bad news to their fans - midfielder Miguel Almiron has suffered a hamstring injury and will miss the rest of the season.

The 25-year-old, who has impressed for the Magpies since his January 2019 club-record fee arrival from Atlanta United, was injured in Saturday's 3-1 win over Southampton and left the pitch in tears.

Almiron will be unavailable for the final three games of Newcastle's league campaign against Brighton, Liverpool and Fulham, the club confirmed on their website, and he also faces a race to be fit for selection for Paraguay at this summer's Copa America.

Here is how some of the Toon Army faithful reacted on Twitter to the news:

Almiron, who helped Atlanta win the MLS Cup in only their second season in existence last year, has made 10 appearances for Newcastle in his debut season.

His performances have invigorated the Magpies, who are now safe from relegation, 10 points clear of the bottom three with just three games - nine points - left to play.

The Copa America, which Almiron will be hoping to make, gets under way in Brazil on 14 June, with Paraguay opening their campaign against Qatar in Rio de Janeiro two days later.

Newcastle United's Miguel Almiron arrives before the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Southampton at St. James's Park, Newcastle on Saturday 20th April 2019.
