Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez's current contract expires at the end of the campaign.

Jamaal Lascelles speaks to the media after the Newcastle United Training session at Carton House on July 16, 2018, in Kildare, Ireland.

Jamaal Lascelles has told Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley that he should do everything to keep Rafael Benitez at St. James’ Park, through his quotes in the Chronicle.

Benitez’s contract expires at the end of this campaign and the Spanish boss has still not penned new terms at Newcastle.

There are fears rising that he could leave Newcastle amongst supporters, and Lascelles admits that the players are also concerned.

“Yes, of course it does [worry us as players that he might leave] - there aren’t many managers like him. Of course, as players, we want him here and Newcastle should do everything they can to keep him,” he said.

Benitez looks set to guide Newcastle to a mid-table finish once again this season, despite only having a limited budget.

And the former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss has made no secret of what he wants to happen, if he is to stick around with the Magpies.

Benitez is keen for Newcastle to be more competitive in the Premier League, and he wants more funds to spend in the summer transfer window, as well as more freedom to target older players.

Benitez is currently on a contract worth £75,000-a-week at Newcastle (The Daily Express), and would surely be given similar terms if he was to sign an extension.
