It seemed as though Tottenham Hotspur had been dumped out of the Champions League by Manchester City, before VAR intervened.
Jan Vertonghen spoke to reporters after his side's dramatic progression through to the semi-finals of the Champions League on Wednesday night, and shared what he said to his Tottenham teammates after Raheem Sterling scored what they thought was the winner at the time, as quoted by Goal.
The match was finely poised at 4-4 on aggregate in injury time, with Tottenham going through on away goals, when Sterling broke Spurs fans' hearts.
It was only temporary, however.
VAR intervened and the goal was adjudged to have been offside, effectively sending Tottenham through to the semi-finals of the Champions League.
And Vertonghen shared how he reacted after he and his teammates thought that Spurs had been dumped out of the competition, as quoted by Goal:
"No-one was even appealing for offside, we all thought they had scored. Everyone was on the floor, but there was still two or three minutes left. So it was 'let's try and get the ball in the box and we will see whatever happens'. And then out of nothing, the referee came up with VAR. We didn't even know."
Tottenham now face Ajax in the semi-finals of the Champions League, and they will have their work cut-out if they are to reach the final.
The Spurs players will still fancy their chances, however, and it might just be that it is written in the stars for them this season to taste success for the first ever time in Europe's premier competition.
