We’ve ranked the 10 best post-credits scenes in the MCU, does your favourite make the list?
In the past, movie-goers would be eager to leave once the credits start. Now though, cinemas often remain packed, particularly for Marvel’s superhero movies, as fans wait to catch the extra post-credits scene.
Over the past 11 years, we’ve had everything from teases for upcoming films to downright trolling of audiences.
As there have been so many post-credits scenes in Marvel movies over the years, we thought we’d have a go at picking some of our favourites and without any further ado, here they are…
10. Iron Man – Part of something bigger
We start with the MCU’s first ever post-credits scene that came up after the credits for Iron Man back in 2008.
This post-credits scene is huge in the building of the MCU. Even Nick Fury himself says that Tony Stark part of a much bigger universe.
Little did people know at the time that this scene was referring to a full decade of cinematic and box office dominance that has seen today’s MCU go from strength to strength and recent releases regarded as must-sees for anyone interested in films.
9. Thor: Ragnarok – Alright, we’ll call it a draw
The second end credits scene on our list comes straight from the mind of Taika Waititi and his film, Thor: Ragnarok.
After the people of Sakaar try to overthrow the Grandmaster, Jeff Goldblum’s character weasels his way out of a truly tricky situation by referencing Monty Python’s Black Knight from The Holy Grail.
After his apparent capture and defeat, the Grandmaster declares the revolution ‘a tie’ before the film ends.
The truly whacky film wouldn’t be complete without its post-credits scene referencing such an iconic scene.
8. The Avengers – Anyone for Shawarma?
Up next we have the post-credits scene from the first truly landmark moment in the MCU’s history, 2012’s The Avengers.
After their narrow victory over Loki and fending off the huge alien invasion, Tony Stark suggests the gang try shawarma.
This is arguably the first scene to troll audiences who waited until the end of the credits. After such a huge cinematic event you might expect something interesting and impactful to occur once the credits have finished.
But no, we see our six heroes, exhausted and slumped, chewing away on their shawarma.
7. Captain Marvel – I’m not cleaning that up
The next post-credits scene to make our list is from 2019’s Captain Marvel.
On the subject of trolling and toying with audiences, this has to be up there.
After Goose the cat, who’s not really a cat, swallows the all-important Tesseract, one way or another that has to come back out again.
What we get, after 10 minutes of credits, is Goose, up on Nick Fury’s desk, wheezing and spluttering as he throws up the Tesseract in disgusting fashion that cat owners will be all-too-familiar with.
6. Infinity War – Is, is that a pager?
After the harrowing events of Infinity War, some fans were left perplexed by this scene from Avengers: Infinity War.
Thanos has won. He’s collected all six of the Infinity Stones and has just wiped out half of all life in the universe.
Not even Nick Fury is safe as he too is turned to dust, right before Samuel L. Jackson gets time to utter his trademark catchphrase.
But what we see next left some fans scratching their heads.
Those in the know however knew, Captain Marvel, one of the most powerful heroes in the MCU, would be coming to save the day.
5. Captain Marvel – Who the hell are you guys?
The perfect continuation of that scene comes up in our second post-credits scene from Captain Marvel.
After almost a year, we finally get an ounce of hope as Captain Marvel returns to Earth to help the Avengers in their darkest hour.
This scene was the ultimate teaser for Avengers: Endgame as Marvel’s newest hero could well prove the difference in the fightback against Thanos.
4. Guardians of the Galaxy – I want you back
After several serious scenes, we turn to perhaps the silliest one of all.
Coupled with the Jackson 5’s I Want You Back, seeing a newly regrown Groot happily dancing away never fails to put a smile on your face.
There’s little more to say about this scene. It pays no significance to the wider MCU, it’s just a cheery way to end the film after we thought Groot was gone for good earlier on.
3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – You guys were my lift home
Stan Lee’s cameos have always been a huge part of Marvel’s MCU movies and this might be one of the most important.
We see Stan earlier on in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 retelling his stories to the mysterious Watchers, a group of omniscient aliens.
The scene brilliant confirms that Stan Lee’s cameos are all connected in some way and that the character he plays has some way of appearing at all of the important events in the Marvel universe.
2. Age of Ultron – I’ll do it myself
After catching brief glimpses of Thanos in 2012’s The Avengers, this time we really know it’s about to go down.
Thanos has clearly been losing patience as Humanity refuses to destroy itself and so decides to take it upon himself to collect the Infinity Stones and complete his evil mission himself.
The significance of this moment is huge and sets in motion the events that will eventually lead to the tragic events that unfold in Avengers: Infinity War.
1. Spider-Man: Homecoming – Patience is a virtue
However, our favourite post-credits scene of them all has to be this…
Once the credits for Spider-Man: Homecoming have rolled, we get this absolute gem.
Credits for Marvel’s superhero films are not short, therefore fans often think waiting around until the end will yield something with at least a little bit of importance, a teaser for an upcoming film perhaps.
But not here. Earlier in the film, we see Captain America in motivational speech videos made for schools across America. What we get at the end of the film is the perfect post-credits scene for the movie we’ve just watched.
Cap’s whole speech about patience is wonderfully delivered and fully mocks the audience for waiting around.
And there we have it, those were out 10 favourite post-credits scenes from the MCU. Did your favourite make the list?
