Southampton have been linked with a deal for Kalvin Phillips.
Southampton have been linked with a move for Leeds United's Kalvin Phillips.
The Sun (p14/4 p61) claimed Phillips is a top transfer target for Southampton, but a deal can only happen if Leeds fail to win promotion.
Leeds currently sit second in the Championship, meaning Ralph Hassenhuttl's side may have to look elsewhere.
As for where Phillips would fit at Southampton, there is no clear gap in midfield for the 23-year-old.
Oriol Romeu, James Ward-Prowse, Mario Lemina and Pierre-Emile Hojberg provide strong competition.
Considering The Sun's claim Leeds would demand £20 million for Phillips if they don't go up, it would be an odd area for Southampton to invest so much money.
The Saints' record signing is the £19 million spent on Guido Carillo in January 2018.
Leeds fans have fiercely resisted the prospect of losing Phillips, and Southampton fans are not crazy about a deal either.
Here is a look at how Southampton fans reacted on Twitter to the reports...
Lads we’ve never spent £20m in our history, were stacked in midfield and the sun really ffs— Aydin Osman (@Aydin_Osman96) April 16, 2019
Add clarke to that aswell, call it £25mill double deal— Ashley rake (@ashersfc) April 16, 2019
Leeds such a good club they let Cantona go & kept Chapman. Won nothing since first division & been down for 15 years. Had Ken Baites as chairman & still have delusions of grandeur. Then believe the sun that we want your soppy seconds. Our academy churns out better every year.— friend or phony (@llowssco) April 16, 2019
Crazy. As a saints supporter I'd say no way would Leeds sell anyway. And offer would be too low. So I think just made up to unsettle player. Ralph probably go Europe anyway.— Pgdelr❌ (@Pgdelr1) April 16, 2019
The replies to this are a little embarrassing on both sides. We wouldn't really be in for him as we have enough cover in midfield. Leeds are a big club historically, but then again so are Blackburn and Preston. Also, this is from the Sun who claim Real Madrid want Declan Rice. ♂️— Scott Winter (@ScottWSFC) April 16, 2019
