Aston Villa have announced that they will be travelling to the United States to play Major League Soccer side Minnesota United in a pre-season friendly this summer.

The match will take place at the end of a US-based pre-season training camp ahead of the start of the the 2019-20 season - with Dean Smith already having flown out to check out the facilities - and will be played at Allianz Field on Wednesday 17 July with a 7pm local time kickoff.

In a statement, Villa's official website said their tour of the US is hoping to provide the Championship club with commercial opportunities to get their name - and that of the city of Birmingham - known, a key element of their strategy to reach out to our fans all over the world both online and in person.

Indeed, the Villans added that they are working on packages for UK and US-based fans to stay near the squad, watch them train and attend the match in Saint Paul.

The club posted the announcement on their Twitter feed on Tuesday:

Here is how some Villa fans responded on the social media platform to the somewhat unexpected choice of pre-season destination:

Villa are currently fifth in the Championship table, five points clear of seventh place with just four games to go, so there is every chance that they could be going to Minnesota as a Premier League team.
