Alan Shearer has suggested on BBC Sport that Hugo Lloris was partially to blame for a key goal Tottenham Hotspur conceded away to Manchester City tonight.

Pep Guardiola's side went ahead for the first time in this Champions League quarter-final tie on 60 minutes when Sergio Aguero thrashed home, making it 4-3 on aggregate.

The Tottenham goalkeeper was beaten at his near post for that goal in particular, but Shearer told BBC Sport that the Frenchman virtually helped Aguero by going to ground.

He said: "He [Aguero] takes a touch and smashes it past Hugo Lloris. He hits it well but if the goalkeeper stands up, he saves that."

Yes, Lloris was beaten at his near post, a cardinal sin for any goalkeeper at any level, but to focus so much on that would detract from the goal itself.

It really was a phenomenal strike by the Argentine marksman and although the much-maligned Lloris - slammed for an error at Liverpool last month - is bound to get criticised again, perhaps more emphasis should be placed on the quality of the goal.

In the end, the Aguero strike wasn't decisive as Fernando Llorente scored a controversial goal on 73 minutes as Mauricio Pochettino's side advance into the semi-finals of the competition on away goals, after the tie finished 4-4.
