Rangers weren't in action over the weekend, having been knocked out of the Scottish Cup in the quarter-finals by Aberdeen, who lost to Celtic on Sunday.
Steven Gerrard will have been pleased to give his players a break having endured a frantic schedule for much of the season, but there was also a chance for fringe players on Monday.
Rangers took on bitter rivals Celtic in a reserve game at Firhill, and it was the perfect chance for January signing Matt Polster to continue building up his fitness.
However, winger Glenn Middleton stole the show for the Rangers reserves, scoring twice to hand his side a 2-0 win and an Old Firm win.
Middleton featured prominently in the first team earlier this season, but having lost his form, he has dropped back down into the reserves.
With five goals in his last eight games for the reserves, Middleton is in blistering form, and he is doing himself no harm at all as he bids to get into Gerrard's first team plans.
After his goalscoring exploits on Monday, some are calling for Middleton to be brought back into the first team setup, believing that he deserves a chance ahead of summer flop Eros Grezda.
Others think that Middleton is in a weird position of being too good for the reserves and not good enough for the first team, meaning a loan move may be the next best step, even after being impressed on Monday.
Glenn Middleton flying again for the reserves. The last few games of the season are an ideal chance to let him get more game time. He was excellent when he first broke in. But became too predictable and some poor performances. Hopefully learned from it and can kick on now.— Billy. (@SaltChilli1) April 15, 2019
Glenn Middleton is in this weird position of not good enough for the first team yet but too good for the reserves— Scott Young (@Scottyoung_4) April 15, 2019
Great win for the Rangers Reserves. Thought Cammy Palmer was outstanding one of his best performances in a Rangers jersey. Two great finishes from Glenn Middleton as well. Saying that the who team battled & we deserved to win the game— Willy (@SpatestonBear2) April 15, 2019
Glenn Middleton appears to be too good for this level but his first team chances will be limited next season. I’d like to see him loaned out to gain regular first team games, potentially to the top end of League One or a Scottish Premiership team.— Copland Front (@CF3Loyal) April 15, 2019
Glenn Middleton gonna be some player— Goldie (@Goldieaye) April 15, 2019
I’d like to see Middleton get more game time with the first team. I think we have a cracking young player here and looks like he’s been on form recently. 5 goals in 8 games? https://t.co/2SyGzf9EUL— thefamous (@thefamous55) April 16, 2019
2m on gredza but Middleton barely gets a kick— Lyndon Bowes (@Lyndon11) April 15, 2019
Give Middleton a run in the team till the end of the season— Stewart (@stewartboyack) April 15, 2019
