The Baggies are continuing their search for their next permanent manager. Darren Moore left the Hawthorns last month, and it did look like Alex Neil may end up being the man to come in and replace him after James Shan took temporary charge.
However, Sky Sports reported at the weekend that Neil has now signed a new three-year deal with Preston North End, seemingly confirming that he will not be heading to their Championship rivals anytime soon.
The Sun on Sunday (14/4; page 61) is now reporting that Black Cats chief Ross is now a potential contender for the post after overseeing a promotion charge at Sunderland that could still end with the club finishing in the top two.
But despite giving Sunderland a fantastic chance of making their stay in the third tier brief, it appears that he would have plenty of work to do to win the West Brom fans over if he did arrive.
Plenty of Baggies supporters on social media appear to be very underwhelmed by the prospect of Ross being appointed, with one fan (surely) joking that they would rather see Alan Pardew make a return.
Here is how some of the fans reacted to the reports...
Give me strength, step backwards again and no ambition. Would rather Neil and still wouldn't want him— allnewswba (@allnewswba) April 15, 2019
I think I’d sooner get Pardew back in— Parsnip (@pazparsnip) April 15, 2019
I’d stick with Shan, and look for a new owner and CEO— steve (@soulman137) April 15, 2019
