Rafael Benitez is out of contract at Newcastle United at the end of the season.

Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips suggested on the Goals on Sunday show on Sky Sports Premier League on Sunday afternoon (12:53pm, April 14, 2019) that Newcastle United should hand Rafael Benitez a new contract.

Benitez has been in charge of Newcastle since March 2016 and is out of contract at the Premier League club at the end of the season.

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid has kept the Magpies safe in the Premier League for two seasons in a row, and he is hugely popular among the St. James’ Park faithful.

Former Sunderland striker Phillips believes that the Magpies need to prioritise securing the long-term future of Benitez.

Phillips said on the Goals on Sunday show on Sky Sports Premier League on Sunday afternoon (12:53pm, April 14, 2019): “I think the priority is to get Rafa Benitez signed up.”

Newcastle United stay

Benitez has been superb for Newcastle, and it is hard to think of a manager of his class and stature who would be ready to take the managerial job at St. James’ Park in the summer should the Spaniard decide to leave.

The Magpies are unlikely to find a better manager than the former Chelsea boss, and the club should do their best to convince him to sign a new contract and build a competitive team for next season.
