It is looking highly likely that both Midland rivals will meet in the playoffs if they are able to maintain their current standings in the table.
Speaking to BBC Radio West Midlands (13/04/2019, 19m), former Villa and Baggies striker, Thompson shared his thoughts on the potential mouthwatering clash.
"Definitely got goals in it [a Villa & Albion playoff semi-final]," Thompson told BBC Radio WM. "You've got two strikers [Gayle & Abraham] who score goals for fun. Well three, if you count Rodriquez as well.
"This is a game that offers goals. I looked at the table earlier saying about the Albion playing the Villa, it's not the ideal one you want. But then again, the way the Villa side are playing they are on a run, they are winning games for fun and finding a way to win even when things aren't going well.
"Albion have come back to life again - also, for Albion, it's about getting a new manager in, the new manager bounce, he will get enough points to get them into the playoffs. They want to go into them not limping like they were, but on the back of a couple of wins."
Villa, who have won eight games on the bounce, are sitting fifth on 69 points, with fourth-placed Albion four points ahead of them in the table.
Depending on results until the end of the season, both teams could potentially swap places and if that is the case then the team in fourth would play the first leg of the play-off semi-final away from home.
Earlier on in the season, Villa recorded a 2-2 draw at the Hawthorns, with Jay Rodriquez scoring the stoppage-time equaliser with his hand. But in the reverse leg, Albion, who had Darren Moore in charge at the time, won the encounter 2-0.
