Unai Emery’s Arsenal beat Serie A giants Napoli 2-0 in the Europa League quarter-final first leg with Aaron Ramsey and Lucas Torreira on the score sheet.

Arsenal have one foot and a few toes in the semi-finals of the Europa League after cruising to a 2-0 win against Napoli at the Emirates on Thursday night.

On paper, the Gunners appeared to have been drawn against the most daunting opposition the competition had to offer but Napoli made a mockery of their pre-game reputation with a sloppy, error-strewn performance that Arsenal took full advantage of.

Aaron Ramsey continues to sign off in style with another well-taken goal that gave Unai Emery’s side an early lead before Lucas Torreira ensured the North London giants will have a clear lead heading to Italy next week when his long-range drive deflected in off Kalidou Koulibaly.

But the scoreline, and the balance of the tie, could have been very different if it wasn’t for Laurent Koscielny.

Some might have thought Koscielny’s career at the top level was over when the 33-year-old was stretchered off in serious pain against Atletico Madrid 11 months ago, but Arsenal’s captain marvel has returned with a vengeance.

And it was his warrior-like spirit and superb positioning that ensured Napoli do not have an away goal to hang their hopes on.
