Jason Holt has returned to Ibrox earlier than planned.

The 26-year-old midfielder was one of the first victims of Steven Gerrard’s Rangers overhaul last summer, being farmed out on loan to Fleetwood Town in the third tier of English football.

But, after 29 league games for the Cod Army, Holt’s spell in the north west came to a premature end. He was stretchered off in the 14th minute of a clash with Accrington Stanley, leaving Fleetwood with little choice but to send Holt back to Glasgow for rehabilitation.

After an impressive loan spell at Fleetwood, however, does a player described by Cod Army boss Joey Barton as ‘outstanding’ have any chance to reviving his Rangers career? Well, probably not.

Steven Davis and Glen Kamara both moved to Ibrox in January while Greg Doherty is expected to have a big role to play under Gerrard after a superb loan spell at Shrewsbury Town over the last few months.

Speaking to the Blackpool Gazette this week, Barton confirmed that he would love to bring Holt back to Highbury this summer and it appears that a permanent departure is best for all parties.
