Barreca has flopped in the Premier League and Newcastle United are reportedly looking for left-backs in Spain, Italy, Holland and Belgium.
Newcastle United are scouring the market for a new left-back ahead of the summer transfer window with the club increasingly unlikely to sign Antonio Barreca on a permanent basis, as reported by The Chronicle.
The highly-rated Italian was snapped up on loan from Monaco in January and looked set to finally provide an answer to Rafael Benitez’s problem position.
But Barreca has played just four minutes of Premier League football in the last three months, meaning that The Magpies are set to turn down the chance to sign him for around £8 million, as reported by Gianluca Di Marzio.
And The Chronicle reports that Newcastle are already looking for a replacement. They have sent scouts to Holland, Belgium, Italy and Spain with a left-back once again a top priority for Benitez.
The report suggests that Ajax’s Argentine international Nicolas Tagliafico is still on their radar after a sensational season in the Eredivisie.
But The Chronicle adds that Newcastle couldn’t afford Tagliafico last summer and his reputation, and price-tag, has soared since. The Sun (25 March, page 51) claimed that Arsenal and Tottenham are now looking at the attack-minded South American, who is valued at £15 million.
