A Shazam! sequel is inbound following the success of the recent superhero effort, so let's take a look at the project so far.
Shazam! has landed and audiences are praising this comedic and heartfelt approach from the DCEU. It definitely looks like the cinematic universe has finally gotten on track, as it has been ridiculed by Marvel fans and beyond in the past for its gloomy and lifeless tone. Recent efforts such as this and Aquaman have resisted the tone offered in such previous Zack Snyder works as Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, instead providing audiences with an energetic and lighter alternative.
This approach has definitely worked out for the studio, with ratings and reviews reflecting a surge in quality. We're patiently anticipating Wonder Woman 1984 for release next year and, of course, plans for an Aquaman sequel are shaping up behind the scenes. Superhero sequels are common, so we knew that if Shazam! was even the slightest success, we'd get another instalment. Fortunately, not only are audiences getting one, but they actually want one.
Despite the film only having released just recently, news has already come flooding in to stir excitement for the follow-up. In David F. Sandberg's (Annabelle: Creation, Lights Out) first superhero outing, we follow Billy Batson (Asher Angel), a teenage foster kid who is given the ability to transform into an adult superhero (Zachary Levi) by saying the word "Shazam!". It's a quirky, fun setup with lots of room to have fun, which is exactly what the cast and crew did. So, what do we know about the sequel?
As reported by ScreenRant, it looks like Warner Bros. has hired Henry Gayden to write the script for the sequel. He's been celebrated for his work on Shazam! so it's a no-brainer to have him back, really. The same source predicts that Sandberg will be back to direct, which leads us to the obvious feeling that Levi and the central cast will reprise their roles; after all, it's only getting started. What makes us think that? Well, besides the sequel, we're also expecting Black Adam.
Empire recently noted that Dwayne Johnson - who is set to play Black Adam - has confirmed that the film should begin shooting next year. For those unaware, the character is one Shazam's enemies; the villain has, however, become more of an antihero in recent years, and with Johnson on board, we expect they'll translate this to the screen. With this, it looks like fans of Shazam! have a lot to look forward to in the next few years. This unique superhero is here to stay.
