Premier League powerhouses Manchester United apparently scouted DC United’s MLS star Acosta at the weekend.

Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Michael Owen and Robin van Persie. What do these players have in common? They all lined up alongside Wayne Rooney during their storied playing careers.

So Rooney’s claim that Luciano Acosta is one of the greatest teammates he has ever had the pleasure of sharing a pitch with should not be taken with a pinch of salt.

At the age of 24, the DC United forward is building a big reputation over the Atlantic, having scored 10 MLS goals and tallied a further 15 assists in the 2018 season.

Speaking to the Real GM over the weekend, Acosta claimed that he could follow in Rooney’s footsteps with an eye-catching move to Manchester United in the summer with the Old Trafford giants watching him during DC United’s 4-0 defeat to Los Angeles.

“I’m obviously happy (Manchester United) was here—they came to see me, and obviously I just went out and tried my best,” he said.

You can imagine that United would ask Rooney’s opinion before making a move for his DC United strike partner – and the club’s all time record goalscorer is likely to speak warmly of a player he clearly rates very highly.

“He needs to keep motivated,” Rooney told the Washington Post in February after a potential move to PSG fell through.

“He now knows what kind of teams are interested in him. If he continues performing up to his ability, he will get there. He’s young and he’s talented — one of the best I’ve played with.”
