Sunderland beat Rochdale 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Sunderland strengthened their push for an automatic promotion spot in League One this season by coming from behind to beat Rochdale on Saturday afternoon.
The Black Cats hammered Accrington Stanley in midweek to bounce back perfectly from their Checkatrade Trophy final defeat to Portsmouth, and they picked up another key win.
Rochdale actually took the lead though, as Ian Henderson threatened to give the relegation-threatened Dale a shock win over Jack Ross's side.
However, Sunderland hit back in the second half, with Charlie Wyke producing a smart turn and finish to draw his side level, before George Honeyman claimed a dramatic late winner for the Black Cats.
With Barnsley losing 3-1 at Burton Albion, Sunderland have now moved level on points with the second-placed Tykes, but have two games in hand over the Yorkshire outfit.
Sunderland are now favourites to claim promotion over Barnsley, and the potential return to form of striker Wyke could be a huge boost for Ross and co in the search for promotion.
The summer signing from Bradford City has struggled for form and fitness this season, but finally bagged his first league goal since the 1st of October after some promising recent displays.
Sunderland fans have now been taking to Twitter to hail Wyke, praising his performance whilst backing him to have a huge part to play in the final weeks of the season, with Sunderland pursuing a return to the Championship.
Absolutely delighted for Wyke getting his goal today. He's looked sharp ever since the Walsall game and finally he's getting his rewards. #SAFC— Richard Easterbrook (@1Easterbrook) April 6, 2019
Wyke was outstanding today I thought. Not only did he take his goal well but he was a constant nuisance for Rochdale all afternoon, wouldn’t give up on anything & kept battling.— Michael Bowers (@MichaelBowers15) April 6, 2019
McGeouch & Oviedo (when he came on) were also very good. #SAFC did it the hard way but tide turning?
Is it fair to say Charlie Wyke has started to show his worth as an SAFC player over the last couple of games? And if so, it's come at the right time!— Matt Crighton (@MattCrighton) April 6, 2019
Absolutely buzzing for Charlie Wyke! Led the line well again today. #SAFC— Gary Wilkinson (@GazWilko86) April 6, 2019
Absolutely delighted with that, huge win! Wyke lead the line very well today, happy for him to get his goal. Burton done us a massive favour anarl, excellent response since cup final! Tremendous character! #safc— Kevin Moeliker (@Kevsol) April 6, 2019
Deserves that. After a frankly dreadful start, Wyke's been excellent over the last month or so. Now to push on #SAFC— Ed Syers (@edsyers) April 6, 2019
CHARLIE WYKE, CHARLIE CHARLIE WYKE! With abit of confidence he's a different player— Lew (@Lew_Safc) April 6, 2019
