Newcastle United were heavily linked with a move for the Ajax defender during the summer transfer window.

Nicolas Tagliafico has suggested to the Daily Mirror that he is ready to leave Ajax in the summer, just months after being linked with a move to Newcastle United.

The Chronicle suggested that Newcastle were keen to take Tagliafico at the start of the year, but were unable to pay his £8 million price tag.

Tagliafico has continued to impress with Ajax this season, with the Dutch side progressing well in the Champions League.

And the left-back has now suggested that a move could be in the pipeline in the summer, which could alert Newcastle to his availability.

“I think in the summer it could be a natural time to take the step,” the defender admitted.

“But I try not to think about taking that step just yet because we have many important games to focus on.

“Yes, it’s flattering because I think it’s the most competitive league. When you are a child, the target is to come to Europe and play in a top league like the Premier League.”

Whether Newcastle will be able to fund a move for Tagliafico at the end of the season remains to be seen.

It is thought that Rafael Benitez may well stay on, if he is promised funds from Mike Ashley.

A left-back could well still be on Newcastle’s wishlist too, as their options in the position seem as if they could be upgraded.

Tagliafico would be an impressive signing for Newcastle, but they could now face increased competition to sign him, as his profile has been increased as a result of Ajax’s Champions League run.
