HITC Sport understands Ipswich Town are leading the race to sign Tranmere Rovers striker James Norwood on a free transfer.

Ipswich Town are in pole position to land prolific Tranmere Rovers striker James Norwood on a free transfer at the end of the season, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Norwood has enjoyed an outstanding season for Tranmere and was named League Two Player of the Season at the EFL Awards .

The 28-year-old is out of contract at Tranmere this summer and, although he has been offered a new deal, he is expected to move on as a free agent.

Ipswich, Burton Albion and Fleetwood Town have been leading the hunt to sign the leading goal-scorer in England’s top four divisions this season with 27 goals to date.

All three clubs have made regular checks on Norwood this season and they see him as someone who would be a valuable addition to their squads.

Ipswich looked destined for relegation to League One and Town boss Paul Lambert has made a new striker one of his top priorities for next season if they are to win promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

Norwood will make a firm decision on his future at the end of the campaign, but Ipswich are favourites to secure his signature.
