DC’s latest film has scored big at the box office but how does its opening weekend compare to the billion-dollar Aquaman?

DC have added another film to their extended cinematic universe in the form of Shazam!

The fun-filled superhero movie is pure wish-fulfilment as 14-year-old Billy Batson has superpowers bestowed upon him by a mysterious wizard.

Shazam! is effectively a crossover between Superman and Tom Hanks’ Big and even makes a brief musical reference to the latter.

The film has received praise from critics for its light-hearted and comedic tone and cinema-goers have responded accordingly by turning out in force to see Shazam!

As a result, DC’s latest film has opened with a remarkable $53 million in the US. For context, DC’s most successful film in recent years, Aquaman made $67 million from its opening weekend late last year. That’s not a million miles off for David F. Sandberg’s addition to the DCEU.

However, while Shazam! has enjoyed a respectable opening by any standard, it pales in comparison to Marvel’s latest box office hit. Captain Marvel opened with a truly incredible $153 million and currently has a box office total of $1.03 billion a month after its release.

Despite that though, box office records are expected to tumble later this month when Marvel release their long-awaited Avengers: Endgame.

Have you seen Shazam! yet? Or are you waiting for the release of Avengers: Endgame on April 25?
