Ian Henderson put the home team in the lead after 28 minutes, but Jack Ross’s side restored parity through Wyke on 56 minutes.
George Honeyman scored the winner for the visiting team in the 89th minute.
Former Sunderland forward Elliott was following the match, and he has praised 26-year-old striker Wyke and 24-year-old midfielder Honeyman.
Wyke joined Sunderland from Bradford City in the summer of 2018 for an initial transfer fee reported by The Sun to be worth £500,000.
The former Carlisle United striker has made eight starts and 10 substitute appearances in League One for Sunderland so far this season, scoring two goals in the process, according to WhoScored.
The result means that Jack Ross’s side are third in the League One table with 79 points from 39 matches, level on points with second-placed Barnsley, who have played 41 games.
Absolutely buzzing for Charlie Wyke. Will be a huge player in the next couple months. That goal will do wonders for him. Hats off to Honeyman for grabbing late winner too. #safc— Stephen Elliott (@SleevesElliott) April 6, 2019
