Arsenal reportedly made a bid to sign Barcelona’s La Liga and World Cup winner Samuel Umtiti on Monday.
Samuel Umtiti appears to be emerging as one of Arsenal’s main summer targets.
Goal reported recently that Barcelona were willing to listen to offers for France’s World Cup winning centre-back as they aim to finance a bid for Ajax wonder kid Matthijs de Ligt, and it didn’t take long for The Emirates to emerge as a potential destination.
Tuttomercatoweb claimed on Monday that the Gunners had made a bid to sign Umtiti on loan for the 2019/20 season with an option to buy for around £38.5 million – a bargain in today’s transfer market.
If Arsenal want to lure Umtiti to North London, hiring Andoni Zubizarreta as their new director of football could come in handy.
According to L’Equipe, Marseille’s transfer guru is tempted by a move to Arsenal, who have identified the Spaniard as their number one target after missing out on Sevilla-bound Monchi.
In an intriguing twist, it was Zubizarreta who was behind Umtiti’s £23 million move from Lyon to Barcelona in 2016 (AS).
The former Spanish international goalkeeper was Barca’s director of football at the time and laid the groundwork for Umtiti’s big-money switch, even if it was his successor Robert Fernandez who got the deal over the line.
If Zubizarreta arrives at Arsenal, don’t be surprised if Umtiti follows.
