Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has told Football.London that he had to laugh at how his side played against a team with two midfielders worth a combined £100million on the bench.
However, Spurs were dire in the first half, and fell behind as Roberto Firmino headed home a superb Andrew Robertson cross, and Tottenham had to find an answer in the second half.
Pochettino switched up his tactics, and the change certainly worked as Tottenham dominated the second period, and earned a deserved equaliser when Lucas Moura scored from close range.
Tottenham created chances to win the game, with Moussa Sissoko blazing over when through on goal before Dele Alli hooked a shot over the bar – and they were ultimately made to pay.
Mohamed Salah's late header was relatively feeble, but Hugo Lloris strangle parried the ball back into the area, and it ricocheted off Toby Alderweireld and into the net, handing Liverpool a dramatic 2-1 win.
With one point from five games, Tottenham's top four place is under real threat, but Pochettino still found some room to laugh at Anfield.
Pochettino admitted that he thought Tottenham showed the right arrogance in Sunday's defeat, dominating the game – and he had to laugh at their superiority against a side who had two midfielders on the bench totalling £100million in Fabinho and Naby Keita, money Spurs could only dream of spending. Liverpool won't mind though, as they took all three points and continue their push for the title.
“You know I was so disappointed after Southampton because we showed in the wrong way our arrogance,” said Pochettino. “Today that is the arrogance I want to see in the team, like in the second half with our superiority. We were laughing a little bit because more than £100m in two midfielders, Keita and Fabinho on the bench, and you go and play and you are better and dominate,” he added.
